The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Essay To turn Jim in, or not to turn Jim in, that is the issue that Huck is confronted with in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Regardless of whether it is nobler to secure a companion or to surrender to the requests of society by completion a kinship. This tale depicts a period in American history where most Southern whites thought about blacks as a bit of property. Huck, a white Southern kid, and Jim, a flee slave, had a kinship that was unseemly in the public arena. During their daring excursion, Huck would need to go up against the outcomes of ensuring a flee slave, in the event that he chose to give Jim security. All through this novel the connection among Huck and Jim contrasts all through society due to Hucks emotions towards Jim. These two swashbucklers had wanted to leave the Mississippi and go North, however botched their opportunity. The waterway took them more distant and more remote South. In the event that Jim was gotten, he would be in a difficult situation. On the off chance that Huck didnt turn Jim in, he would likewise be in a tough situation. We will compose a custom exposition on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now Huck wound up engaging with his inner voice, when he understood how close Jim was to his opportunity, I started to get it through my head that he was most free㠢â‚ ¬Ã¢â‚¬ and who was to be faulted for it? Why, me. I couldnt get that out of my heart, no how nor no chance. pg. 85 Turning Jim in would be troublesome, since he was a considerate and pleasant man. It was not equitable that he ought to be harmed, however in the event that Huck helped Jim flee, he would need to walk out on his own kin. He would state bondage, and everybody who had confidence in it, wasn't right. Huck went to the choice to enlighten somebody regarding Jim that will constrain him once again into subjugation. Before long enough they experienced two white men on a rowboat. During this occurrence Huck saw that his emotions to secure Jim were more grounded than his sentiments to hand him over. He lied when the men inquired as to whether Jim was white or dark. Each time they experienced others who may turn Jim in, Huck was set up to uncover another false story. Huck realized that Jim depended on him to secure him and not deceive him, since they had a unique kinship that most whites and blacks could never have, ous de bes fren Jims ever had; en yous de just fren ole Jims got now. pg. 87 At the point when Huck and Jim are distant from everyone else, Jim cannot resist discussing what he will do once he turns out to be free and Huck couldnt very exposed that sort of talk. It most solidified me to hear such talk. He wouldnt ever set out to talk such talk in his life previously. pg. 86 But Huck kept on ensuring Jim in the public eye, he had the option to trick anybody so as to ensure Jim was sheltered. Outside of society Huck didnt need to imagine anything. In the public arena he needed to retaliate his blame and stow away Jim. The exceptional kinship that Huck and Jim had together differentiated extraordinarily from the moderate connections among whites and blacks in the South. Whites felt that slaves had no emotions at all, yet Huck realized that Jim had sentiments quite recently like every other person. They gave worry for each other and here and there Jim resembled a dad figure to Huck. As they invested more energy with one another, their kinship became more grounded and more grounded until Huck could forfeit things for Jim. Imprint Twain introduced the horrible presence of servitude and gives the peruser a major experience in how a white can forfeit such a great amount for a captive to arrive at opportunity.

Why Many Teenagers Are Exhausted - Free Essay Example

The amount of sleep, on average, that teenagers are getting is between 6 and 7 hours when they should be getting between 9 and 9 hours. Many teenagers come to school and they are exhausted. That is because they are not getting enough sleep. Between homework, school, sports, family, and friends it is almost impossible for people to get enough sleep, but it is very important to do so. Sleep deprivation is something that most everyone has felt at least once in their life. A lot of people think that because they can make it through each day that not getting enough sleep isnt a big deal, but it is. Not sleeping enough takes a toll on teenagers physical, mental, and social health. First of all, one thing many teenagers do not realize is that a lack of sleep affects your physical health. Teenagers who get less sleep have a higher risk for many health problems. For example, you are more likely to get into a car accident because you could be very drowsy and not react fast enough. There could be problems with your memory because during sleep, the brain forms connections for processing and remembering information and if the brain does not have enough time to make those connections, it could affect short and long-term memory. Sleeping less than 5 hours puts people at a risk for higher blood pressure. High blood pressure could also turn into heart disease. Sleep deprivation causes the chemicals that let your body know you are full become off balance which could lead to weight gain and obesity. Not enough sleep also puts your body at a risk for diabetes because it affects your bodys release of sugars and insulin. It puts you at risk for higher blood sugar and therefor e, Type 2 Diabetes. Your body is your temple, and by not getting enough sleep, you are walking into many problems with your physical health. Another important part of a teenagers health that is affected by sleep deprivation is their mental health. While sleeping, everyone goes through many stages. During the quiet sleeps deepest stage, physiological changes happen. Some teenagers dont get to that stage because they dont go to bed early enough. There is a stage called REM(Rapid Eye Movement) which develops your emotional health and changes it. Without that stage, your emotions would be very off balance. By not getting enough sleep, you are at a greater risk of getting insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep-related problems. Studies have shown, about 90% of children and teen who have depression, have some sort of sleep problem. Sleep deprivation can also build and contribute to the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety, etc. Some people lay in bed and dont sleep because they are thinking and stressing about things. Stress and being too hard on yourself are bad for your emotional and mental wellbeing. If you just lay down and forget about anything going on just for the 9 hours that you should be sleeping, your mental health will improve greatly. People who get enough sleep are usually more awake during the day, happier, healthier, and have less stress. By being sleep deprived, the mental and emotional aspects of teenagers lives change drastically. The final part of the health triangle, social health, is also affected by sleep deprivation. As teens are not getting enough sleep, their social lives are being affected greatly. Relationships are impacted by sleep. For example, if you are dating someone and they do not get enough sleep one night, they can be cranky and take it out on you, putting a burden on the relationship. The problem of having a rough day with your partner can come full circle and cause you to have trouble sleeping that night and so on. It is harder for people to read others expressions and what they are trying to tell you when you have not had enough sleep versus when you have. When teenagers are too tired, all they want to do is take a nap. Some friends might ask you to hang out but you decline because you would rather catch up on sleep. Eventually, those friends stop asking you to hang out and just because you did not have enough sleep, you lose friends. Finding new friends can also be difficult when a lack o f sleep makes you groggy and crabby all the time. Family relationships will weaken and not many people will want to be around someone who just wants to sleep and never socialize. Sleep is important because being awake is a key aspect in socialization. How can you make friends when you are too tired to go out? You cant! Sleep deprivation has been studied and it has been proven that it affects your social health. To conclude, sleep deprivation can be very easy to fix, just sleep more! We could also have a later start time at school or restrictions on homework so that teenagers can get more sleep. Having a later start time would be beneficial because it has been proven that teenagers perform better later in the day rather than earlier because they get more sleep and are more awake in the middle of the day. A lack of sleep beats down on your physical, mental and emotional, and social health. Getting enough sleep can improve every aspect of your health. It is very important to get the necessary amount of sleep, 9-9 hours, a night. So stop staying up so late, try to sleep longer, and catch up on all that sleep you missed studying, doing homework, or doing another activity!

The Beach Literary Analysis Paper - 776 Words

The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a â€Å"paradise† as their final destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be seen in Alex Garland’s The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard, Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia-like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the â€Å"cancer† of traveling and the destruction that it brings. â€Å"I†¦show more content†¦Along the way, Richard left behind instructions on how to get to the island for Americans that they met along the way. Mainly because it is in a secure area, it can be inferred that someth ing bad will eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The spread of this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his friends, who later shares it with other travelers. By the time they arrive on the island, Richard, Etienne, and Francois discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that cultivate marijuana which can also foreshadows negative events to happen. For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states â€Å"‘You fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone s so friendly. It s such simple stuff, but... If I could stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I d restart it like this. For everyone.’† (Beach 106.) However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of unfortunate events began to occur. A shark attack took place causing the severe injury in one member and the death of another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the man who was injured was later killed. Afterwards, a majority of the travelers in the community ate raw food which led to more than half of them to undergo a serious illness. Best School Lunch Sicilian Broccoli and Cauliflower Pasta free essay sample

My favorite place in Napa, California isn?t a twenty-star restaurant, it isn?t an artisan olive oil producer, and it isn?t a tasting room with a penchant for terroir-specific local wines. My favorite place in Napa is  The Oxbow School. It is a small, semester-long boarding program for high school students combining hard-core interdisciplinary academics with the study of visual arts. In addition to top-flight academics, the school nourishes creativity through a kitchen, headed by chef Tracy Bates, that prepares food to rival many of the schools pedigreed Napa neighbors.I stumbled onto the Oxbow School (just before their first class arrived) five or so years ago and have been peripherally involved with it ever since. In my mid-twenties, I worked on quite a few projects in the teen publishing space and and wanted to stay involved with teens (even if it wasn?t on a professional level) moving forward. When I was contacted about giving an  Independent Food Festival Award  this year, I figured there would be no better time to recognize Tracy and the Oxbow School for:  Best School Lunch.   Read more about my favourite dish Ill also take this opportunity to tell you a little bit more about the school, the food, the philosophy, and how it all ties together into one unique and progressive place. The Oxbow School sits at a bend in the Napa River a short walk from downtown Napa, and a stones throw from the  COPIA  center. Not only does Oxbow have one of the most progressive and demanding curriculums Ive seen, it re ally tries to look at students as individuals and whole people ? and a nutritious, delicious, and varied meal plan is a big part of that. The chef: Tracy is a woman close to my own heart. Not every school is blessed with a chef coming from Chez Panisse. Tracy made the jump from the restaurant industry to Oxbow and has used her skills from the start to develop ways to expose and teach each class of students about the importance of good, simple, and thoughtfully-prepared food. Her kitchen embodies the philosophy that there are delicious alternatives to fast food. Her offerings are constantly exploring the idea that eating fresh, seasonal food doesnt mean brown rice, blah steamed vegetables, bark and twigs. There is always a vegetarian (or vegan) option, and they like to mix things up a bit with crowd-pleasing favorites interspersed with a few more exotic offerings thoughout the course of a semester. For example: Mac+Cheese and Aloo Gobi, just not at the same meal. She and I are in agreement that hands-down, there is no better way to change minds or eating habits than to feed someone a delicious alternative to fast or over-processed foods. What I love about the food at Oxbow is that it is fresh, seasonal, unfussy, and family-style. The newly restored dining hall is bright and casual with big tall ceilings, amazing art on the walls, and it is a perfect place to enjoy a meal whether you are a student or adult ? it?s just a nice environment to be in.The Oxbow garden, just outside the kitchen window supplies fresh produce and ingredients for meals. The students can participate in planting, weeding, and harvesting each week if they are interested. The garden is able to supply everything from greens (both cooking and salad), potatoes, and tomatoes to herbs, garlic, and the last time I was up I noticed a variety of freshly planted citrus trees. The students can also participate in the kitchen as a co-curricular activity twice a week, where they might do things like: work on knife skills, make marinara sauce (learn to work without a recipe), make ginger cake (learn how to work WITH a recipe), comparative tastings (i.e. olive oils). All activities working towards instilling a sense of respect for the food they are preparing, knowing what they are eating and where it comes from, and kitchen safety and sanitation. The Oxbow School is a rare and unique place. Unfortunately there aren?t more schools out there like it. If you are interested in getting more information about the school, or know a young person who might enjoy and benefit from a semester at Oxbow, take a look at  their website.Tracy was nice enough to give me this favorite Oxbow recipe. She says it is surprising because you would think it is a dish that students might not like but they do. Its got savory, spicy, sweet, and earthy going on all at once. They serve it with a side of pan-fried chicken, but it makes a great entrà ©e on its own for the vegetarians. A word of caution, this is a BIG batch. We enjoyed leftovers for days ? but for smaller households you might consider cutting the recipe in half. Thanks to Tracy and the Oxbow kitchen staff for a tasty recipe. I would love to see a cookbook of all the favorite Oxbow recipes sometime down the line I would be the first one to buy it.
